Biography
Dr Schmidt is a member of the European Force on Age-related White Matter Changes. He is also a member of the Austrian Society of Neuroimaging, and the Austrian Society for Stroke Research, and the president of the Austrian Alzheimer Society, and of the Working Group Neuroepidemiology and Prevention of the Austrian Neurological Society. He is a member of the VITATOPS-Steering Committee: a worldwide project on homocysteine-lowering multivitamin therapy in patients with recent ischaemic attacks or stroke. Dr Schmidt is or has been a principle investigator in the CASCADE study on diabetes and cortical atrophy stratified by abscence and presence of hypertension, in the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, and in the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study.
Research Interest
Dr Schmidt`s clinical and research interests focus on the managing and treatment of vascular dementia combined with cerebrovascular diseases, in the pathophysiology of vascular cognitive impairment and Alzheimer`s Disease, in white matter lesion progression in patients with small vessel diseases, and in the prevention of diabetes.
